EXCLUSIVE: Lewis Vaughan out until 2025 as Raith Rovers star told he needs surgery The fans' favourite is expected to be sidelined for around 4 months with his hamstring injury. by Iain Collin September 30 2024, 5:09pm Share
Raith Rovers have been dealt a devastating blow after being told Lewis Vaughan needs surgery that will keep him out until next year.
The striker will undergo an operation on his damaged hamstring on Tuesday after scans last week revealed a rupture of the muscle.
The 28-year-old had to be substituted early in the 3-3 draw with Hamilton Accies and now faces a likely recovery period of around four months.
It is the latest in a list of luckless injury setbacks for Vaughan, who has bravely battled back from career-threatening knee injuries on four separate occasions.
Initial tests on his latest issue indicated the severity of the damage and specialists have since recommended going under the knife.
“Lewis is going to go and get operated on,” Raith manager Neill Collins explained to Courier Sport.
“The positive thing is the timescale shouldn’t be too bad. Hopefully he’ll be back in the New Year to play a part in this season.
“So, he’s not out for the season or anything like that. And we’re hoping he’ll be back for the last few months.
“It was one of those things, very unfortunate. It actually happened because the Hamilton player kicked him and his leg gave way.
“It’s a ‘separation’ of the muscle and it’s not the kind of injury you can do from running.
‘Fair share of bad luck’
“Lewis has had his fair share of bad luck, and this is an unfortunate one.
“But we’ll get it fixed and start his recovery. You never know with these things but the likelihood is you can return quicker if you get the operation.
“Everyone is different but I would say with the operation that four months is a good benchmark.”
On a more positive note, summer signing Callum Fordyce has returned to training after an ankle problem.
The former Airdrie player-assistant was injured in the opening Championship game of the season against his old club and has faced a lengthy rehabilitation.
But, after missing the last seven games, the 32-year-old could make himself available for a comeback away to Morton on Saturday.
“Callum was back training today, so that’s really positive for us,” added Collins.
“He’ll train for the rest of the week and, if everything is okay, he’ll come into contention for this weekend.”
Meanwhile, Raith have decided against any further transfer business as the loan window closes.
“Nothing is happening with the loan market,” said Collins. “But obviously the free-agent market is still available to us and we’ll keep an eye on that.”

Not good news regarding another long term injury to Vaughan, sadly not surprising. I find him a hard watch as he's always a challenge, twist or turn away from breaking down. The medical bills and wages paid whilst injured must be off the scale for a club our size. He must have spent 5 years in re-hab. I have always thought if that money was spent on a striker who could play regularly and score roughly 15 goals per season, we might have had a better chance of achieving Premier League football. Here's hoping he can return early next year and bag a few and stay fit until the summer. The manager is going to have to use his contacts to get someone in as we are going to struggle to score goals now i fear.

Hate to say it but I think Vaughan is finished Unfortunately, he has rarely ever enjoyed a run in the team of any length that would be considered normal.☹️😕. He has mine and no doubt everyone’s sympathy but the flip side is the club has been without one of thee most gifted players we have ever produced. A very sad tale.😔. We can but hope.🤞🤞🤞🤞

It is still premature to write off LV. I understand frustration at losing a talented player, who without injuries would no doubt have played at a higher level. You can't argue with his positve mental attitude towards recovery. I wish him well in rehab and will welcome him with open arms once he returns to the squad for the play-off push!

LV is one of the Rovers players who gives his all. All too often, he was left to do too much on his own up-front, for someone of his size and stature.
Worrying scenario, but I hope this has a good outcome for Lewie and for for the club!

I would understand the worries and would perhaps agree that we should cut our losses if Vaughan had tore an ACL again but this is a totally different injury, to his hamstring this time. He went all of last season pretty much injury-free and scored a lot of goals despite not being an out-and-out striker. Injuries happen to every player and I am not writing Vaughan off just yet.

Yes, Niall, I agree with you. I hope to see LV displaying his considerable talents in a Raith top for a number of years yet. Some, like Red Zebra on another thread, would like to thank Lewie for his past service and show him politely to the door. But,, as you say, Niall, it's not another ACL ( which I suspect would be too much for even LV himself) ,it's an injury which could have happened to any player. If we had replaced him with Anton Dowds ( a step down in class IMO) ,would we be in a better position now?

Franco, would you continue, year in year out, to pay an employee who is only available half the year because he is popular with your customers or would you rather have someone who turned up every day & did the job he is paid for? As a business I know which one I would opt for. I should caveat that with the fact I have had the pleasure of meeting Lewis many times, especially in his earlier years with the club and I have nothing but respect for him and what he has been through but, if I'm running a business, he's a liability.

I get where you are coming from RZ, but we are not computers nor a spreadsheet. Even in business there has to be a degree of compassion displayed to allow your best performers help to achieve the results you desire. Lewis scoring 19 goals last season is testament to that. It’s not just turning up every day going through the motions doing the job. Football thrives on players having that little something different or special to excite the fans and making a difference, I firmly believe Lewis does this and is well worth the investment the club has and hopefully will make in nursing him back to first team duties. Feel free to name us a player who is available and we can afford that can deliver the same commitment, goals and excitement as Lewis. A liability! Not the words I would choose for a hero to many, and a well loved part of the Rovers family.

Just being devils' advocate longtimefan it will be a tough call for the board but I think they have already shown how hard nosed they can be and as others have said, they are looking to monetise more and more aspects of the club, probably in line with other clubs, but I think the cuddly family feel we are used to may be on the wain in favour of a more business oriented model where there is little room for compassion. I guess I'm trying to paint the bleakest of pictures in the hope it doesn't happen and that Lewis makes a full recovery and stays fit because he still has probably 4-6 years in him yet.

Fair enough RZ, We really could have done with a fit and on form Lewis yesterday!! The board have done a lot of positive things, although not signing a striker in the summer and being weaker up front than where we started the previous season, might turn out to be a worse decision than sacking the manager after 1 league game. It’s a long time to the January sales 😀

I would like to point out that the signing of TWO really good centre half’s from hibs was meant to be the basis for a turnaround.🙄🙄, was that down to IM……or was it the board’s choice??.
They are 34+…….I am still of the opinion that it wasn’t the best deal the board have done. At that age, imo, the fire in the belly is not the same as younger up and coming mid twenties with something to prove and still looking to hit the big time!.
Signing to aged centre half’s on 3 year deals , gonna be interesting to see how many starts they both make during their 3 years.🤔🫣.
I sincerely hope that my pessimism is wrongly placed.🙄
Also, why would hibs release them if the were still good enough to play premier league?
